Campus culture

Our campus in Hamilton has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere that will make you feel at home as soon as you arrive. Everything that you need is available on the campus, including health services, access to money, a variety of great food providers and even a pharmacy.

You can find a bargain at Rewind pre-loved clothing, enjoy DJs and live music during cultural hour events at the Village Green, and sample some of New Zealand’s eclectic and exciting cuisine.

A variety of housing options are available for you, including homestay, halls of residence, and shared or independent living in houses or apartments.

International students can apply for their accommodation through the University.

Students at Waikato have many talents and interests, many of which are catered for in our clubs and student organisations on campus. Develop your leadership skills with AIESEC Waikato, share recipes from home with Waikato Students’ Union (WSU) Cooking Club, or showcase your gaming abilities with Waikato United Gaming Society. With over 40 student clubs, there is something for everyone.

Throughout the year, the team at the International Services Office organise activities and trips for students to see the best of New Zealand. You will be able to see some of New Zealand’s world-famous natural wonders, take in a rugby game or even try your hand at some extreme sports with your new friends.

When you progress to the University of Waikato, you will be able to continue studying at the Hamilton campus, or study in the newly opened Tauranga CBD campus.

Located in the heart of Tauranga city, the new campus enhances our current range of qualification available to students in the Bay of Plenty area. It features purpose-built lecture theatres and computer labs, has its own library, and dedicated student support.

Sport is a great way to make new friends and meet like-minded people. The University offers a range of sports facilities on campus, including one of the best-equipped gyms in the region, a 50-metre swimming pool (open in summer months), a diving pool, dance studio, tennis, squash, and netball courts, sports fields and an indoor cricket facility. Join an indoor or outdoor league in a sport such as netball, touch rugby, or six-a-side soccer.
