Campus culture

Life on our campus in Hamilton has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere that will make you feel at home as soon as you arrive. Everything that you will need is available on the campus, including health services, a bank, a variety of great cafés and even a hair salon.

You can find a bargain at our student market days by the lake, enjoy DJs and live music during cultural hour on Wednesdays at the Village Green, and sample some of New Zealand’s eclectic and exciting cuisine.

The Waikato Students’ Union (WSU) gives students a strong collective voice on campus and nationwide. WSU also organises activities on campus such as Orientation Week, Clubs’ Day, musical performances and guest speakers.

Students at Waikato have many talents and interests, many of which are catered for in our clubs and student organisations on campus. Develop your leadership skills with AIESEC Waikato, share recipes from home with Waikato Students’ Union (WSU) Cooking Club, or showcase your gaming abilities with Waikato United Gaming Society. With over 40 student clubs, there is something for everyone.

Throughout the year, the team at the International Services Office organise activities and trips for students to see the best of New Zealand. You will be able to see some of New Zealand’s world-famous natural wonders, take in a rugby game or even try your hand at some extreme sports with your new friends.

On campus you'll find a selection of cafés and food outlets to suit every taste, with hot and cold food options available including salads, sushi, Indian food, burgers and more.

We have over 1,300 bike spaces including bike racks, covered areas and lockable storage units. There is on-campus car parking for students at a maximum cost of $2 a day. Students also have the option of purchasing a parking permit for $60 a semester.

There is also a bank, a pharmacy, a book store, travel services, lost property, a convenience store and a medical centre available on campus.

Sport is a great way to make new friends and meet like-minded people. The University offers a range of sports facilities on campus, including one of the best-equipped gyms in the region, a 50-metre swimming pool (open in summer months), a diving pool, dance studio, tennis, squash, and netball courts, sports fields and an indoor cricket facility. Join an indoor or outdoor league in a sport such as netball, touch rugby, or six-a-side soccer.
